BE-Basic Foundation supporting Isobutanol Platform Rotterdam

BE-Basic Foundation is supporting a significant innovative public-private bio-based/biotech initiative concerning the greening of Rotterdam’s chemical industry. The Isobutanol Platform Rotterdam (IBPR) is taking on permanent shape. Four knowledge institutions (ECN, TU Delft, Utrecht University and Wageningen University) are working closely together with six business partners (AVR, GTBE company, HbR, Indorama, SkyNRG and Suiker Unie) to explore the opportunities to process sugar, second generation residual flows of beet, rapeseed, soy, grain, palm oil and third generation aquatic materials (seaweed) into valuable and sustainable raw materials for the chemical industry.

Some examples of these are paraxylene and artificial rubber and fuels such as jet fuel, diesel and additives for use in soot suppression. A desk study is currently underway and the results will form a first indication of the technical, financial and sustainability potential. Should this desk study lead to a positive outcome, the next step is to develop knowledge through experiments at laboratory scale and enter into discussions with technology providers. During this stage, relevant technology available at other BE-Basic Flagships will of course be looked at or perhaps developed further at these locations. All such activities are governed by the BE-Basic Consortium Agreement. In the event this phase is successfully concluded, a pilot, which will run until the autumn of 2014, will be launched in conjunction with the Bioprocess Pilot facility Plant One (Botlek) and current chemical and fuel industry partners. Following this, the first commercial production is set to take place in 2020.

The Bioprocess Pilot Facility (BPF): enabling the transition to a bio-based economy

Many developments in the production of chemicals, materials and fuels from renewable materials are currently being made on laboratory scale. But in order to reach industrial implementation novel processes and technologies need to be tested and demonstrated at a relevant scale.

Given the complexity, the costs and the risks associated with scale-up research, CSM/Purac, DSM and Delft University of Technology decided to join forces in the Bioprocess Pilot Facility BV: a state-of-the-art 5000 m2 facility for industrial biotechnology.

The BPF is financially supported by the European Union, the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation, the Province of South Holland and the Municipalities of Rotterdam, Delft and The Hague. It officially opened on May 15th 2012 and it is ready to operate.

Kinderspeelhuis toont biobased bouwmaterialen

"Bij het Rijkspaviljoen op de Floriade is een kinderspeelhuis gerealiseerd dat vrijwel volledig gemaakt is van biobased bouwmaterialen. Gekozen is voor een demontabele constructie met verwisselbare panelen, zodat het speelhuis lange tijd dienst kan doen als demonstratieobject".

Ht Biobased Kidshouse is gerealiseerd door BE-Basic.

Slimmer procesontwerp dankzij nieuwe apparatuur

"De groep Bioseparation technology van de TU Delft onderzoekt en ontwikkelt processen voor de farmaceutische industrie. Deze maand opende de groep een nieuw lab met alle nodige apparatuur om processen te ontwikkelen op basis van mathematische modellen en analytische screening."

Het laboratorium is mede gerealiseerd als onderdeel van BE-Basic.
