About BE-Basic

The BE-Basic Foundation (Biotechnology based Ecologically Balanced Sustainable Industrial Consortium) is an international public-private partnership that develops industrial biobased solutions to build a sustainable society.

The BE-Basic Program was founded early 2010 and originally coordinated by Delft University of Technology and builds on the recognised breakthroughs of the B-Basic and the Ecogenomics consortia. An overview of the highlights of B-Basic (2005-2010) is presented in the B-Basic book “Based on bio”.

The BE-Basic program started in 2010 with an R&D budget of €120 million of which half is funded by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation as part of the Economic Structure Enhancement Fund (FES). The other half by industry and knowledge institutions.

A total of ten Flagships cover the research fields needed for the transition to a biobased economy. In 2012 the BE-Basic Program became part of the new established BE-Basic Foundation which is a separate legal entity. The rights and obligations laid down in the Consortium Agreement for the BE-Basic Program partners remains the legal basis of the BE-Basic Foundation. BE-Basic Foundation has an actual R&D budget of €45 million (~ US$ 60 mio) per year.

Building our Biobased Economy

BE-Basic builds our Biobased Economy. In a Biobased Economy the resources for the production of our chemicals, materials and energy are not based on fossil fuels, but on bio-based renewable resources. Like agricultural waste and non-edible plant materials. A shrinking supply of fossil fuels, rising oil prices and climate changes urges our society to act now and to build our Biobased Economy together. What does BE-Basic do?

Research & Development

BE-Basic Hosting Activities

The BE-Basic Foundation is able to respond and anticipate dynamically to future developments in the national and international arenas. We are involved in developments in the Dutch Top sector Policy in general, and more specific in the Top consortium for Knowledge and Innovation for the Biobased Economy (TKI-BBE).
We are able to host new projects within national, European and international research, development and innovation programs such as BRIDGE.

Innovation

The BE-Basic Innovation Centre (BE-BIC) coordinates, promotes, supports and evaluates all valorisation activities within BE-Basic. By doing this we want to raise the awareness of innovation concepts, stimulate ideas and implement them toward commercial activities like spin-offs.

International collaboration

The transition to a bio-based economy is an international development. Our aim is to expand worldwide in terms of consortium partners and research collaborations. Worldwide BE-Basic has strategic partnerships with institutions in Brazil, Germany, Malaysia, U.S.A. and Vietnam.

Bioprocess Pilot Facility

The Bioprocess Pilot Facility (BPF) is a unique multi-purpose facility for bioprocesses. Universities, companies and knowledge institutions from all over the world can investigate in this open access facility how production processes respond to large scales and how they can be scaled up. The BPF is located in Delft and jointly set-up in cooperation with BE-Basic Foundation.
